How Kris Potts is Turning Construction Ideas Into Real Projects
Canada's construction industry has no shortage of ideas.
Modular construction. 3D concrete printing. Robotics. Artificial intelligence. New training models. Faster approvals. Better housing policy.
The conversation is already happening.
Kris Potts is more interested in what happens after the conversation ends.
As CEO of Norseman Construction, Potts has spent the past several years investing in technologies and projects that most contractors only discuss. His company became the first construction company in Canada to own and operate a Constructions-3D MaxiPrinter 3D concrete printer, worked with Printerra and Build a Dream to deliver the eight-week LiveWell Training Program, developed Project LiveWell, and created Construction Disruption—a documentary and YouTube series dedicated to following emerging construction technologies beyond the sales pitch and into real-world application.
For Potts, none of those projects exist to chase headlines.
They all begin with the same question.
How do better ideas become better buildings?

Beyond the Prototype
Construction has always evolved.
New materials replace old ones. Equipment becomes more efficient. Building methods improve over time.
Potts believes the next evolution will come less from discovering entirely new technologies and more from combining existing ones more intelligently.
Large-scale concrete printing.
Structural insulated panels.
Volumetric construction.
Artificial intelligence.
Traditional wood framing.
He doesn't argue that one of them will replace conventional construction. Instead, he sees each as part of a larger system where different methods solve different problems.
That philosophy is already shaping Norseman's work.
The company became the first construction company in Canada to own and operate a Constructions-3D MaxiPrinter 3D concrete printer. At the same time, Norseman worked with Printerra and Build a Dream to deliver the eight-week LiveWell Training Program, giving participants hands-on experience with additive construction, structural insulated panels and industrialized building methods.
Potts sees those initiatives as inseparable.
Technology without skilled people achieves very little.
Training workers for technologies that never reach jobsites accomplishes just as little.
Both have to move forward together.
Project LiveWell
Perhaps the clearest example of Potts' thinking is Project LiveWell.
Rather than treating affordable housing as a single technology problem, the concept is designed to combine modular logistics, structural insulated panels and 3D concrete printing into a coordinated building system, supported by workforce training intended to develop the skills needed to deploy those methods. The vision focuses on six-storey mid-rise housing, using industrialized construction methods to improve speed, consistency and long-term performance.
The project remains in development.
That's important.
Potts rarely presents these ideas as finished products. He speaks about them as concepts to be tested, refined and improved through real-world construction rather than theory alone.
That mindset also appeared throughout our conversation.
Rather than claiming to have solved Canada's housing challenges, Potts repeatedly returned to the need for builders, governments, manufacturers and educators to work together instead of pursuing separate solutions.
Construction already has many of the necessary tools, he argues.
Connecting them is the harder challenge.

Construction Disruption
As those projects expanded, Potts realized something else.
Very few people outside a small group of specialists were seeing them.
That became the motivation behind Construction Disruption, the documentary and YouTube series Potts created to follow emerging construction technologies beyond the sales pitch and into real-world application.
The series follows emerging construction technologies from the people building them—not simply the companies selling them. Episodes explore subjects including 3D concrete printing, modular construction, artificial intelligence, robotics and industrialized housing while documenting both the opportunities and the practical challenges involved in bringing those ideas to market.
Instead of presenting innovation as polished marketing, the goal is to make the process visible.
What works.
What doesn't.
What still needs to be solved.
That distinction reflects Potts' own perspective.
He isn't interested in promoting technology because it's new.
He's interested in whether it actually improves construction.
Norseman Construction
None of those ideas would carry much weight if Potts were speaking only as a commentator.
He isn't.
Norseman Construction remains an active design-build company serving homeowners throughout the Greater Toronto Area.
Long before experimenting with industrialized construction, the company earned its reputation solving practical construction problems.
Potts recalls that some of his earliest work involved changing locks, managing deficiencies and taking on difficult jobs many contractors preferred to avoid. Over time, Norseman grew into a residential design-build company, adapting through market shifts while expanding its construction, renovation and design capabilities.
Today, Potts describes Norseman as operating with two complementary focuses.
One delivers renovation and construction projects for clients.
The other explores technologies and systems that may influence how those projects are built in the future.
The relationship between those two sides is what makes Norseman unusual.
Ideas are expected to survive contact with real construction.
New technologies still have to satisfy building officials.
New systems still have to make financial sense.
New methods still have to earn the trust of homeowners, trades and construction professionals.
Innovation is never separated from execution.
Building Forward
Spend time with Kris Potts and one thing becomes clear.
He doesn't see construction's biggest challenges as reasons to slow down.
He sees them as problems worth solving.
Sometimes that means investing in equipment no one else in Canada owns.
Sometimes it means launching a workforce training program before the industry fully understands the technology.
Sometimes it means creating a media platform simply to document what builders are learning along the way.
Those projects may appear unrelated at first.
They're not.
They all begin with the same belief.
Construction doesn't need more conversations about what the future could look like.
It needs more builders willing to test those ideas, learn from them and, when they work, build with them.
For Kris Potts, that's never been separate from Norseman Construction.
It's simply the next project.
